ScrollScholar is a study app and an app blocker in one. It locks the apps you choose, then makes you answer questions from your own class material before it lets you back in. Here's exactly how it works, step by step.
Step 1: Pick the apps you want to block
You choose which apps stay locked: Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Snapchat, games, whatever pulls your attention. ScrollScholar enforces the block through Apple's Screen Time, so it's a system-level block, not an in-app timer you can swipe past.
You grant Screen Time permission once, during setup. After that, ScrollScholar can lock and unlock your chosen apps without asking again. See app blocker for students for more on why the block itself holds up.
Step 2: Upload your class material and build a course
Next, you give ScrollScholar something to quiz you on. Upload a PDF, a Word doc, a PowerPoint deck, or a photo of your handwritten notes. Group your uploads into a course (say, one course per class), and ScrollScholar reads the material and gets ready to generate questions from it.
This is the part that makes ScrollScholar different from a generic trivia blocker: you're not earning time with random facts. You're earning it by reviewing the exact material from your class. See turn your notes into quizzes for more on how the upload and course setup works.
Step 3: AI generates quiz questions from your own material
Once your course is built, ScrollScholar's AI reads what you uploaded and writes quiz questions from it: the terms your teacher actually used, the examples from your own slides and notes. No generic question bank, no content that has nothing to do with your class.
Those questions get queued up and used every time you try to unlock your blocked apps.
Step 4: Answer questions to earn points
When you want screen time, you open ScrollScholar and answer questions from your queue. You answer, you see if you got it right, you move on. Correct answers earn you points.
You can go through as many questions as you want. The more you get right, the more points you bank.
Step 5: Spend points on a timed unlock window
Once you've got points, you spend them on an unlock window: a set block of time where your blocked apps open up. You decide when to cash points in and how long a window to buy. Study a little, unlock a little. Study more, unlock more.
See earn screen time by studying for the full breakdown of how points and unlock windows work together.
Step 6: Apps lock again automatically when time runs out
Your unlock window is a countdown, not an honor system. When it hits zero, your apps lock again on their own. No timer to dismiss, no "ignore limit" button. If you want back in, the only way is to answer more questions and spend more points.
There's also a language mode
If you're not studying class notes, ScrollScholar has a language-learning mode that works the same way: vocabulary and translation practice earns your unlock time instead of quiz questions from uploaded material. Same locked apps, same points, same timed windows, different way to earn them. See learn a language to unlock your apps for details.
Why it works
Picking up your phone costs nothing. One tap and you're scrolling again. ScrollScholar changes the cost. If you want the apps, you pay for them first, in questions about your own material.
That payment isn't wasted time either. Actively trying to answer a question, rather than just rereading a page, is a different kind of studying: it forces your brain to produce the answer instead of recognizing it once it's in front of you. That's a more useful kind of practice than passively scrolling through notes, and it's the same effort you'd want to be putting in before a test anyway. ScrollScholar just ties it to the habit you already have: reaching for your phone.
