The App Blocker Built for Students

ScrollScholar is an app blocker for students that locks Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube behind quiz questions generated from your own class notes. Study to earn your screen time.

Looking for an app blocker for studying? ScrollScholar blocks the apps that distract you (Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Snapchat, games) and only unlocks them when you answer AI-generated quiz questions from your own class notes. You earn points for correct answers and spend them on screen time, so the only way past the blocker is actually studying.

Why most app blockers fail students

Most app blockers rely on willpower twice: once when you set the limit, and again when the app offers you an "ignore" or "give up" button at the exact moment your self-control is weakest. Apple's built-in Screen Time is the worst offender: unless it's locked behind a Screen Time passcode, its Ignore Limit button turns every block into a suggestion.

ScrollScholar takes a different approach. Instead of a button you can bypass, the gate is a short quiz built from the material you actually need to learn. Skipping the block isn't an option; the "shortcut" is a study session.

How ScrollScholar works

  1. Upload your class material: PDFs, Word docs, PowerPoints, or photos of handwritten notes.
  2. ScrollScholar generates questions from your exact material using AI, not generic flashcards.
  3. Your chosen apps stay blocked using Apple's Screen Time framework.
  4. Answer questions to earn points, then spend points on timed unlock windows for your apps.

The result: the hours you used to lose to scrolling get partially converted into active recall practice on the material you'll be tested on.

What makes it different from other student app blockers

Typical app blocker ScrollScholar
How you unlock Wait, pay, or press "ignore" Answer questions from your notes
Study benefit None (blocked time is just blocked) Every unlock is a mini study session
Uses your class material No Yes: PDF, Word, PowerPoint, photos
Motivation model Restriction Earned reward (points for screen time)

Is an app blocker worth it for studying?

Whether a phone drains you just by sitting on the desk is genuinely contested. A well-known 2017 study found it did (Ward et al.), but a 2024 meta-analysis of 53 studies found no reliable effect (Hartanto et al.). What isn't contested is that picking it up costs you, and that people badly misjudge how often they do: in one logging study participants guessed about 37 pickups a day and actually averaged 85 (PLoS ONE, 2015).

Blocking apps during study time removes the need to re-decide every time a notification lands. An app blocker that quizzes you to unlock goes one step further: it uses the craving to scroll as a trigger for retrieval practice, which a major review rated one of only two "high utility" study techniques out of ten (Dunlosky et al., 2013).
